For the past three summers, my two boys have attended Glorieta Day Camp just north of Santa Fe in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. They have absolutely loved creating memories with new and old friends each summer and experiencing some amazing outdoor adventures.
Some friends asked us to attend Glorieta Day Camp with them a few years ago. And now my kids cannot imagine a summer without it. They look forward to it all year long.
When they first started attending Glorieta Day Camp, I didn’t feel they were ready for sleep-away camp yet I wasn’t ready for them to go to sleep-away camp yet. So sending them to Glorieta fit the bill for being both in the mountains doing outdoors activities. (Hello! It’s a whole week without video games!) But they also return home to their beds each night. Win! Win!
The camp provides a shuttle service to and from Albuquerque each morning and evening. It is a long day for the kids. But they tell me that the bus ride is part of the fun.
Each day the camp provides numerous activities including rock climbing, waterfront (there’s a lake on the property), bike riding, arts and crafts, archery tag, dodgeball, the super-swing, and more! Lunch and a snack is included with the camp price as well.
Safety is very important to the staff at Glorieta. The staff are highly trained. The facilities are properly maintained. And campers wear safety equipment (helmets, life jackets, etc.) whenever necessary.
In addition to all of this, Glorieta is a faith-based camp. We are Christians in our home. So we appreciate the Bible instruction that occurs at the camp and the Christian example that the counselors provide to our kids.
I asked my boys what is one thing they’d like other people to know about Glorieta, and here’s what they said.
“Going to the lake every day is the best! And the drive is worth it!”
“Some of the activities like the super-swing and rock climbing scare me a little bit. But I’m really glad I faced my fears and accomplished those things. I learned at Glorieta that I can do hard things.”
