Have a Word for the Year Instead of a New Year’s Resolution

0

I have fallen into the, “Oh man, it is already March. My New Year’s resolution was to go to the gym 3 times a week, and I haven’t gone in two weeks” trap. This scenario has happened to me every single year. Has it happened to you?

To me, I feel like resolutions set you up for failure. I mean, do we really know anyone who has lived out their resolution ALL year? I don’t.

Having a Word Instead of a Resolution

Two years ago I heard about having a word instead of a resolution, and that completely changed my outlook for the year.

Basically, instead of coming up with a New Year’s Resolution, you come up with a word you want for the year!

Two years ago, my word was FOCUS. I felt like I had too many irons in the fire. I was treading water and not really going anywhere. So I wanted 2018 to be where I really focused on where I was going. My plan was to focus on the things that really mattered to me to get me where I wanted to be. And I was successful.

For 2019 my word is REBUILD. After focusing on the important things in 2018, I felt like there was a lot of rebuilding to do. Relationships, including my marriage, were first and then my businesses. In April, we literally started building a house with no intention of doing that at the beginning of the year, haha! Anyway, I close this year as another success because I have rebuilt a lot of things. And I’m happy to be in the place that I am right now.

How To Find Your Word

To find your word, figure out what is lacking in your life and what kind of person you want to be by the end of the year. Figure out one simple word that will get you there. Some words include Joy, Happiness, Hustle, Gratitude, Action, Smile, Thankful, Grace, Growth, Practice…etc.

I would love to hear what your word is going to be for 2020! I am still thinking about mine.
