Finding Your Motivation in Motherhood (Over and Over Again)

0

The last few weeks for me have been a period of just not wanting to do anything. I’ve had such a hard time getting motivated to do much of anything. Projects, household chores, workouts, just anything. I feel like this is so easy to fall into as moms with everything we have on our plates. I think sometimes this lack of motivation is a byproduct of an overwhelming amount of things we have to do and think about. It all starts to become a chore and so exhausting instead of things we actually want to do.

So how do you find that motivation again?

Spend time playing.

Really take some time away from work, laundry, fancy meals, workouts, your phone, whatever it may be and just play with your little ones. Read books, have a tickle war, play cars or dolls, get outside – just play!  Seeing Elijah’s smile and hearing his little laugh are some of the biggest motivators to me to get up early and get things done, work during naps, and after he goes to bed so I have that time during the day to play more.

Purge.

Go through your house and ditch the stuff you don’t need. Throw out expired food just sitting in your fridge or pantry, toss or donate clothes you no longer wear, and streamline your décor. We all have so much stuff that so much of it never even gets used.  All it’s doing is creating mess for you to have to spend time thinking about.

Try a little self-care.

Get a new outfit or a new pillow. Go get a manicure, go for a workout, whatever self care is to you.  I know I for one am so much more motivated when I do one of these things to feel good or have something pretty to look at.

Get moving.

Just do it. Get up before the kids if you can and go workout. For a couple of days force yourself to do it and I guarantee you wont regret it. Even if it’s a crappy workout, at least you got moving. Take the kids on a walk or workout at naptime even if it’s only 10 minutes that you have. Some activity is better than none!

Stop eating junk!

Food is fuel for our bodies. How can we expect to feel our best when we are putting crap into our bodies? Eating healthy meals is what you need to have the energy to keep up with this mom life! Also – drink water!

Get a planner

I recently purchased the Erin Condren Life Planner, and I love it!  It’s got the perfect amount of space to write everything down, and helps to keep me organized. It is kind of pricey, but I personally feel like it’s so worth it. Writing things on paper works for me, but there are so many other planners and app planners you can use as well!

Ask yourself what really matters.

Is sitting on the couch watching some TV show really doing anything for you? How about scrolling Facebook? If it is, continue on. Sometimes we need a mindless recharge. The point here is to prioritize and don’t waste time on things that are doing you no good.

I think the first and the last points are the ones that get me moving the best. Spending fun time with my little man and questioning the way I spend my down time (two-five minutes a day) seem to get me back on track the quickest.
