Delicious Sugar Cookie Recipe

Today I’m excited to share my favorite sugar cookie recipe from the fabulous blog Sally’s Baking Addiction.  If you have never checked out her blog or recipes you are missing out!  She not only has amazing recipes but does such a wonderful job giving step-by-step directions.

I discovered this recipe a couple of years ago and thought that Valentine’s day was the perfect occasion to pass it on to all of you.

Before you begin there is one crucial decision you must make:  Will this be a mom/child project or not.  Baking with kids is great but it is not for the faint of heart.  (I happened to have one little helper and one little mess maker but in the end we all survived the process.  Barely.)

Once you have made your decision you are ready to start baking!

Soft Cut-Out Sugar Cookies from Sally’s Baking Addiction

3/4 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)

3/4 cup sugar

1 large egg (room temperature)

2 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 tsp almond extract

2 1/4 cups flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350

Combine dry ingredients and set aside (flour, baking powder, salt)

Cream together the butter and sugar for about 2-3 minutes then add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined

Divide dough into two discs, wrap with plastic and refrigerate for one hour (Sally’s recipe suggests to roll out dough before refrigerating)

Roll out dough on a floured surface and use cookie cutters to cut out heart shapes

Bake for 8-11 minutes

You can decorate the cookies once they are cooled or freeze them and save the decorating for a later date.  We chose to freeze ours and will decorate them a little closer to Valentine’s day.
