3 Cheers for My 2 Ta-Tas! Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week

We’re continuing our celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2019 The theme for this year is “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding.” Thanks to Lovelace Health System for sponsoring this World Breastfeeding Week Editorial Series.

I am a breastfeeding mom. But breastfeeding did not come easy. I am really glad I was able to stick with it and even continue extended breastfeeding. Most of all, I am extremely thankful that this part of motherhood has pretty much turned out like I had hoped. (Well, I never imagined I would be tandem nursing a toddler and an infant…ha!

world breastfeeding week, Lovelace, Albuquerque Moms BlogBreastfeeding works for me and my family. And yes, it feels good to celebrate the beauty of breastfeeding in my life. I can celebrate my choices without taking anything away from another mom’s choice.

But I think World Breastfeeding Week reaches beyond that. Maybe World Breastfeeding Week isn’t really about my two tired ta-tas . . .

So, what’s it all about?

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, established in 1991, coordinates the campaign each year. The annual celebration is held in over 170 countries around the world. In partnership with organizations such as Le Leche League International (LLLI) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Alliance for Breastfeeding seeks to inform and engage every year in the month of August.

According to the World Breastfeeding Week website, there are four objectives for this week:

  1. Educate people about the links between breastfeeding and good nutrition, poverty reduction, and food security.
  2. Anchor breastfeeding as the foundation of life.
  3. Engage with individuals and organizations for a greater impact.
  4. Take action to advance breastfeeding as a part of good nutrition, food security, and poverty reduction.

“In a world filled with inequality, crises and poverty, breastfeeding is the foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers.” -World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action

All of that sounds pretty good to me! After reading more about the history and goals of World Breastfeeding Week, I can appreciate the campaign even more. Maybe I will even go to an event next year, like the Big Latch On

Breast is…

What works for some moms, including me. Will I encourage my friends to give breastfeeding a try and share my experiences with them? Yes! Will I one day help my daughter figure it all out, just like my mom helped me? Of course! And will I support all moms, no matter what? Definitely.

International Breastfeeding Week is…

A global celebration every August 1-7th that I can appreciate and celebrate for many reasons. If you would like more information on ways to get involved and support the local breastfeeding community, check out the La Leche League of New Mexico

There are many more resources right here in Albuquerque for breastfeeding moms.

  1. So much good information! I applaud you for breastfeeding a toddler and infant at the same time! We want another baby in the (near-ish) future, and the possibility of having to do that scares me a little.

    • I found that continuing to nurse my toddler helped with jealousy issues that arose when the new baby was born. I don’t tandem nurse all the time, but there are definitely moments when they are both screaming, and there’s only ONE solution that works immediately!
