How the Right Toilet Paper Can Save Your Marriage

My husband has this thing about toilet paper. He has to have what I refer to as the “super-duper pillows on your butt 300-ply Charmin Ultra stuff.” Me, I’m not so picky.

When we first started living together, I bought some lesser TP and immediately realized that to him using the fancy stuff is non-negotiable. I laughed a lot and still do as I spend more money on a package of toilet paper than I do on almost any other household necessity.

We all have that little thing we splurge on that makes our day a little better each time we use it. That amazing smelling hand soap or lotion, your Starbucks habit, the perfect shade of lipstick, fresh-cut flowers on your table, whatever it may be. No matter how your day is going, you know you have that one little thing that will make you smile or at least make you feel a little better.

marriageMy husband and I were joking recently about how knowing he has a thing about toilet paper and making sure he has the right kind honestly helps our marriage. As silly as that sounds, it’s probably true. Little things like that show the ones we love that we love them for their idiosyncrasies. My sister recently got married and our younger brother performed the ceremony. He told them that you have to love the details, not just the things that initially attract you to someone. It’s not about liking the same things they do, it’s about loving how happy those things make them. This resonated with me, and I try to remember it always.

So as you buy the expensive toilet paper, laugh and smile when you think of how such a small thing can make someone so happy. Because little things like toilet paper matter in marriage!
