Thanksgiving Traditions You’ll Want to Try This Year :: From the ABQ Mom Team

Traditions and Thanksgiving go together like turkey and taters! Speaking of turkey, one of my new traditions is ordering a smoked turkey from Rudy’s BBQ instead of attempting to bake a bird in my oven. You are welcome to use that tradition and save yourself some time, mama!

Whether you’re celebrating with family, or friends who feel like family, you might want to start a new tradition this year. We asked our team to share their favorite Thanksgiving traditions. Their answers made me anxious for Turkey Day. Gobble, gobble!

Thanksgiving Traditions

“My family hosts Turkey Bowl every year for our friends in town. It’s a touch football game down the street from our house and then everyone comes to breakfast and mimosas afterward at our house.” –Vanessa B.

My husband’s family eats earlier, then his parents and brother stay up playing games and make turkey sandwiches with the leftovers later that night. It’s so good!” -Katie S.

“We do a football game and it’s so much fun! And the younger kids make desserts with the help of older kids and parents.” -Ren E.

“My mom always makes the cutest place cards and sends everyone home with a little party favor. One year we all went home with socks.” –Jess K.

“Our tradition is to be non-traditional! Ha! Like no turkey and none of the traditional sides. If that’s not your jam, placemats to color were a hit one year.” -Katie D.

“We play Pictionary- the super-competitive edition.” -Andrea J.

“One year I made a pumpkin pie from a real pumpkin. The next year I told my husband I didn’t think the real pumpkin pie was worth the work, but he insisted it was WAY better and I needed to make it again. So when I host I make a real pumpkin pie and another one from the can. Then all the guests do a blind taste test to see if they can tell a difference between the two. It’s sort of a joke between me and my hubby. (Most people can’t tell a difference but interestingly my husband almost always can).” -Paige P.

“We make a huge circle and no one gets to eat until EVERYONE says something they are thankful for. I never really feel thankful right then. But I guess it’s nice.” -Martha N.

“We go to the movies after Thanksgiving dinner.” -Alyssa J.

“While we’re waiting for dinner, most of us (usually everyone but grandma and one helper) go to the bowling alley and play a couple of games as a huge happy family. We’re really competitive and we get very into it. This is probably my most loved holiday tradition of all time.” -Sara T.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at ABQ Mom. We hope you have a wonderful time celebrating with family, friends, food, and traditions!

  1. Our tradition mostly involves the food on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table – roast turkey, sweet potato souffle, cornbread dressing like my mother made it, collard greens, and my buttermilk pie.
