We now know that all New Mexico public schools are closed for three weeks in a response to the COVID-19 (more commonly known as the Coronavirus) threat.
If you work outside your home and depend on childcare or school during the day, what will you do now that your school or possibly daycare is closed to prevent the spread of the virus?
First of all, start having conversations with your employer now. Don’t wait until you get an announcement from your school or childcare facility.
We hope you have an action plan for your family should you be affected by COVID-19. However, it’s not too late to have these conversations with your employer.
Tips for Parents Who Work Outside the Home During the COVID-19 Health Crisis
- It’s important to know that if your child is quarantined due to possible exposure to COVID-19, you will have to self-quarantine.
- If schools or daycare facilities close due to cautionary measures, seek alternative childcare options such as extended family and friends.
- Discuss work-from-home options with your employer.
- If working from home isn’t an option for your job, work with your direct supervisor and/or HR to explore options.
- If you’re able to work remotely, be sure to be upfront about the fact that you’ll have distractions at home.
- Since we are in the midst of a public health crisis, now is not the time to be overly concerned about screen time.
- If your partner can also work from home, tag team the work day so you can both get work done.
Most importantly, don’t panic about COVID-19, moms. We set the tone for our homes. Be wise, thoughtful, and prepared.
