5 Budget-Friendly Family Activities In and Around Albuquerque

When I was growing up, it seemed my mom knew when the fun family activities were popping up around town. I was one of four children, so there wasn’t always a big budget for family entertainment. But that didn’t mean we didn’t get to do fun things! I’m a fan of finding free & inexpensive activities for our little family since I never know how my kids are going to react. I’m going to share with you some of my favorite budget-friendly and free activities for young families.

New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science

We visited the NM Museum of Natural History & Science as a family a few months ago and had so much fun! My three-year-old loved looking at the dinosaur exhibit and looking into telescopes. My one year old just hung out in the baby carrier on my back. We tried to use our stroller, but it was pretty congested, so my husband returned it to the car and the carrier worked just fine.

Admission is free for NM residents (with ID) the first Sunday of each month.

Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum

We also visited the Balloon Museum a couple of months back, and my girls really enjoyed it. There are so many things to look at and learn about! My 3-year-old and I enjoyed learning more about ballooning together. We’ve not yet attended, but there’s also a free story time on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 and 11.

Admission is free every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as the first Friday of each month.

Tinkertown Museum

Tinkertown is unlike anything else, ever! I enjoy taking my girls to this fun and eccentric little spot, just 20 minutes outside of Albuquerque. It’s a unique and has a great history. Our personal family tradition is to stop by Burger Boy on our way back home to enjoy a delicious lunch!

Admission is $3.75 for adults 18-62, $3.25 age 62+ and $1.25 for children 4-18, under 4 is free.

A Park Above

I’ve taken my kids to A Park Above a handful of times, and it’s been a different experience each time. I’m sure it will get busy in the coming warm months, but there are so many activities to choose from, including a splash park, plenty of swings (including wheelchair swings!), a basketball court, musical instruments, and more! There’s plenty of shade, bathrooms, and picnic tables, so you can bring lunch and plan to stay for hours.

Admission is free for all.

Summer Movie Express

From June 20 through August 16, the three local Regal theaters will participate in the Summer Movie Express. They will offer two movies each week, and both movies will show both days starting at 10 am.
