Summer Reading Programs

0

It’s summer, and one of our favorite vacation things to do is take part in the summer reading program at our library. My kids look forward to it all year. They get prizes! Just for reading some books!

Truth be told, I look forward to it too. I loved doing summer reading programs as a child, and I love doing something that encourages my kids to love reading and love going to the library.  It’s easy to take part.

The program starts June 3 for the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Libraries and June 1 for the Rio Rancho Libraries, and it lasts for six weeks.

All you have to do is go to the summer reading desk, sign up your kids, and get their reading logs. I would recommend holding onto the logs for your kids because ours have disappeared in the past. (The volunteers have been understanding the times we’ve lost the lists and needed replacements though.)

Babies can join—time read to a child counts, so your child doesn’t have to be an independent reader to participate. There are programs for adults, too, so you can sign up!

Read

You can make reading at the library a fun summer outing. Each branch has different reading nooks for kids. You could also make a special reading time at home, maybe with a special snack if you’re reading out loud.

If your child loves a particular author or series, remember that you can request books online and have them waiting for you on the hold shelf. You can also check out ebooks online.

Get Prizes!

Each week your kids can come back, get their reading logs stamped, and get a prize (my favorites have been books, though my kids might prefer the toys). There are sometimes drawings for larger prizes by age group.

More Library Fun

The libraries host special events during the summer reading program. All events are free, but you need to register ahead for tween and teen programs. There are lectures and concerts aimed at adults, too. Check the library websites for details!

While you’re there, don’t forget that you can check out a museum pass. Save money and have more outings! The Albuquerque and Rio Rancho libraries have different passes available, so take a look at their websites to see details.
