The Top 10 Reasons I LOVE Cloth Diapering

0

Cloth diapering was something I always wanted to do. My siblings and I wore cloth when we were babies, and one of my best friends was using cloth on her kids when I was pregnant with my first child. So I had great resources. I think many parents consider using cloth, but become overwhelmed by all of the options out there as far as types of diapers go. Then there’s the poop factor; no one wants do deal with poop any more than they have to. (Don’t worry! There’s a sprayer for that!) Here are the top ten reasons that I personally LOVE cloth diapering!

I think the biggest myth out there is that cloth diapers are super labor intensive and that you will spend all your time washing them. Not true. I typically wash once a week under normal circumstances, but it depends on how many diapers you have. I run two wash cycles and then throw them in the dryer. That’s it. When I have a question, I use an informational website called Fluff Love University that has literally everything I will ever need to know about cloth diapers. There’s also a great local Facebook page for cloth diapering families.

2) Cloth Diapering Saves Money

Yes, there is an initial investment involved, and depending on the type and brand you choose, this investment can vary. I use pocket diapers with inserts, and have about 10 newborn sized, 20 infant sized, and 30 infant/toddler sized. I think we have spent $400 on diapers. Think about how fast you would spend that much on disposables. This was one of the biggest selling points for my husband and I, because we live on one income. I also use cloth wipes sometimes, but honestly I go through so many I can’t keep enough clean.

3) Cloth Diapering Is Good for the Environment

This was one of the other big selling points for me personally. It really hits me on occasions that I have to use disposables, like when we travel. I can’t believe how many disposables I go through in just a weekend at my in-law’s. This motivates me even more to keep using cloth. Yes, I use more water, but I feel better about it thanks to my HE washing machine.

4) I Never Run Out Of Diapers

When I am getting low I just do a wash and I’m all set! No frantic runs to Target.

5) It’s Good for My Baby

Both of my children have had sensitive skin, and one has eczema, so knowing exactly what is in their diapers is super important. Cloth diapers also absorb better than disposables, so my children don’t get diaper rash.

6) Cloth Diapers Are So Cute!

Because there are so many companies making cloth diapers, you can get just about any pattern or design you want! Some companies offer special and custom ordering. Even the “basic” diapers come in a huge variety of hues and patterns.

7) I Can Use Them Again, and Again, and Again….

I am using the same set of diapers that I had for my daughter on my son. I know several people who have used the same set for 3 or 4 kiddos. Plus . . . .

8) I Can Sell Them When I’m Done

Provided they are still in good shape, you can totally sell used diapers. This may sound gross, but a lot of people buy used. When you think about it, they are really well taken care of and washed all the time. Every so often you have to “strip” your diapers to get residue from detergents and hard water out of them, which involves a deep clean and increases absorbency. I also do a bleach soak on mine every so often to keep them in top shape.

9) I Can Support Other Moms & Buy Diapers as an Informed Consumer

So many cloth diapering companies are owned and operated by moms! One of the reasons I picked the company I use is because it’s a mom-owned business. There are cloth diaper companies for all preferences: from those made here in the US to those that use fair-trade produced products and those that use all organic materials.

10) They Adjust For A Great Fit

We all know that no two babies are the same size or shape. Even though disposable diapers have sizing based on weight, it’s often hard to find the right fit. With cloth diapers you can adjust not only the waist, but also the legs, preventing leaks and giving a customized fit. This is especially nice when babies start crawling and walking.
