Two years ago, my husband and I embarked on a 6,935-mile voyage, across the Atlantic Ocean with our one- and three-year-old daughters.

It took three planes, lots of Advil, an online therapist, and several days before we arrived. I was dehydrated, malnourished, and sleep-deprived. But my husband was the happiest I’ve ever seen him since he was going back home, and our kids had managed to stay alive thanks to iPads, headphones and lots of chocolate.

With all the changes airlines have made due to cut backs, traveling with small kids basically makes you a traveling circus. Thanks to less space and more fees, nobody wants to couple that with sitting next to a screaming child.  When you board a plane with kids, there are weird looks as if you are carrying an endangered species with you instead of a human child.  Some people even request to change seats as if there’s an apartheid.

Some airlines charge extra fees for a baby, much like they do for a dog, even though the baby doesn’t get a seat or a meal. Don’t even get me started on the stresses of going through security with strollers and baby carriers.

Despite it all, traveling with your family is worth it.

My husband and I take our traveling circus internationally every two to three years to visit family.

One of the best airlines for traveling with small kids is British Airways.  The flight attendants we’ve had have always been accommodating. They’ll even warm up a baby bottle.

So don’t hesitate to take your traveling circus on the road and don’t mind the looks or comments. Everything you pack is replaceable, but the memories are priceless.

Safe travels!
