It’s that time of year again! Time to gather your family in front of a photographer and hope your nerves don’t break. It’s true that some find Christmas cards sessions exciting while others require a hit of mama’s special eggnog before the shoot. Gabe from the Segura Family Shooters just did our family portraits, and I thought it would be a great idea to ask him a few questions about getting the best results for your Christmas card sessions.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us, Gabe!

It’s my pleasure, Vanessa! Thank you for having me!

You just did our family portraits in the Sandia Foothills and we had such a great time! It was just casual and fun, and our kiddos thought it was the coolest! Was that intentional?

Thank you! You guys did a great job! I think my approach has evolved over time. My wife Mandie and I are the parents of 2 amazing little girls and I think they’ve influenced how we interact with families.

Okay, how do I get the whole family to smile and look at the camera?

Wow! A hard one right out of the gate! I believe that looking at the camera and smiling is not what makes a good family portrait and I think it places undue stress on parents and children.

Okay, so what should we be doing?

Well, there’s nothing wrong with the standard smile and look picture. It’s just not going to be a reality for a lot of families, especially with kids under the age of 5. But there’s beauty in that! I like to put kids back in their natural habitat by emphasizing play and adventure, and I encourage you as parents to get involved. Climb a tree! Ride a bike! Dance! In my opinion, those pictures are the best! You look at them and you feel something!

When is the best time of day to take pictures in Albuquerque?

If you’re talking about light, then there’s two. The 1st hour or so of daybreak and the last 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset. It also depends on when your children are at their best. If that’s at noon, then noon is when you do family portraits. If you’re shooting at noon, then there are plenty of options for optimizing the light like setting up near a doorway to the outside with the indoor lights off.

Where are the best locations for family pictures in Albuquerque?

Elena Gallegos open space and Alameda open space. Those are my favorites and they’re easily accessible. The images in this post are from Elena Gallegos open space. And you can see one of my sessions from Alameda open space by clicking here.
