How to Set a Summer Schedule

2

If you are anything like me and have had one or more of your kids in school over the past year, you may be asking yourself, “What in the world did I ever do BEFORE they were in school?” The answer to that my dear friends is, “I have no freaking clue”. Seriously, it’s like our brains choose to block out what our lives used to be (remember those nights of not sleeping? Sorry if you haven’t gotten past that stage yet!) and are content to live in the right now. So I thought I’d share with you how to set a summer schedule.

I started setting a summer schedule when my middle son was born five years ago. I knew I was going to have a C-section at the beginning of the summer, but I also knew my three year old was going to need time out of the house- and my sanity would need it as well. So I set out by setting a schedule for us and lining up friends who would come hang out and swim with my eldest since I wasn’t able to get into the pool until late July.

The first thing I do when setting a summer schedule, is plan the weeklong events that we are going to participate in. This can be camps or VBS or vacations. I make sure and book them into our calendar so I don’t double book anything. I also make sure and set up swim lessons here as well.

After I’ve got our weeks mapped out, I schedule our day plans. For us a typical week during the summer looks something like this:

Monday- Field Trip Day- We go to the zoo, park, Explora, museum or any number of place that are out of the house and fun. I usually try and get us there around opening so it’s not as hot.

Tuesday- Spray Park- Every Tuesday we will pack lunches and head to our favorite spray park, staying for a few hours and playing with friends. It’s a great time to catch up with my momma friends and wears my kids out.

Wednesday- In the past we have gone to a friends house for swimming, but if that is not an option for us this year, we will be going to the Summer Movie Express.

Thursday- We go to a friends house and swim for the morning, eating lunch and then swimming a bit more before crashing for the afternoon.

Friday- We stay at home and play- we air up the giant hamster ball, pull out the slip and slide, have friends over or meet up with them. It’s really a free for all day and a catch up day.

Saturday and Sunday are typically scheduled how we normally spend them during the school year.

After we have set our daily schedule, we break it down to hourly. I really prefer to do activities in  the morning so we can wear ourselves out having fun and then spend the afternoons (and the heat) inside playing games, watching movies and napping (nap time is a gift from God that should be treasured).

A typical day for us might look like this:

7:30-8:30am Wake up and breakfast

8:30am Pack lunches and get dressed

9:30am- head to swim lessons

10:45am- drive to spray park

11:00am-1pm- Spray park and lunch

1:15pm- load up and head home for the afternoon

1:40- Nap for the 3 year old, movie and popcorn for the rest of us

4:00pm- free play

5pm- dinner

That’s how I set my summer schedule. What do you do?
