In Defense of the “Mom Suit”

The other day I had a conversation with a friend who was bemoaning the fact that she would have to buy a mom suit this year. After just having her third baby, she felt like hanging her head in shame as she wore a one piece to the pool.

I can’t stop thinking about this conversation and wondering: what’s so bad about a mom suit?

Why do moms have to be embarrassed to wear a one piece? Since when was sporting anything but a bikini basically saying you’d given up on your body? What is so wrong with a mom suit?

Nothing.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a “mom suit.” Actually, let’s just call it a one piece because that’s what it is. It’s a swim suit that comes in one piece instead of two.

Mommas, there is no reason to hang your head in shame while wearing a one piece.

I’m a mom of three. I am happily married. Like a lot of moms my age, I’m not super fit but I’m not really large either. I could probably wear a bikini if I really wanted to, but why would I? What do I have to prove? I’m not 18 anymore, thank goodness!

When I go to the pool, I go to play with my kids, to escape the heat, and to have some fun. I don’t want to worry about sucking in my tummy all the time or fussing with a top that might ride up or a bottom that might come off. I have enough to worry about with three kids in the water, two of which can’t swim on their own.

And do you think my kids care that I’m not wearing a bikini? Nope. They just want to make sure I saw them when they jumped off the edge all by themselves for the first time. The other moms I meet at the pool don’t care. In fact, I bet everyone feels a whole lot more comfortable around me when everything is nicely tucked in and covered up. And the men at the pool? Well, my husband likes the way I look in a one piece and he’s the only one I’m looking to impress.

Friends, if you find yourself shopping for a one piece this year, good for you! Embrace the fact that you are no longer 18; you’re not on the prowl. You’re shopping for a swim suit to wear to the pool to play with your kids.

Just shopping for a suit means that you’re daring enough to get in the pool when a lot of other moms prefer to sit on the sidelines. You’re the fun mom!

And remember that foregoing the bikini doesn’t mean that you have to go all Duggar style and sport a maxi skirt in the pool. Please don’t. That can’t be safe. There are plenty of really cute one pieces out there! Modcloth.com and Albion Fit are my favorite places to shop. And Amazon even has some cute things for great prices too!

So moms, let’s hit the pool this year with our heads held high. Let’s do away with unrealistic bikini goals and let’s get in the pool with our kids! Because it’s summer and these times with our littles are far too precious.

If you need more inspiration to get into the pool this summer, check out this post from Scary Mommy. It might be my all time favorite post. Ever.
