Christmas with Toddlers :: Easy Ways to Make Christmas Special

Christmas time is here! Time for decorating the house, hanging the lights, baking yummy treats, taking pictures for holiday cards, shopping for the perfect gifts, and getting into the spirit of Christmas.

I enjoy all that goes into making holidays special, but this year I have an infant and a toddler to take care of.  I barely have the energy to tend to life’s daily demands, much less the extra holiday activities.

My baby is now a toddler! Christmas takes on a whole new meaning. Photo by: Rebecca Looker.

After Halloween, I started to feel sad that I wouldn’t be able to deck the halls like I have in the past or deliver delicious biscotti to my friends.  So I decided to make a list of easy ways to make my Christmas with toddlers feel special this year.

Here are some easy activities you can do with little ones. Yes, you can still feel festive without all the fuss!

Wrapping Paper Craft

Grab a roll of light weight craft paper, like this one from Amazon. Give your kids some red and green crayons and let them color on  the craft paper for personalized Christmas gift wrap! You can also buy different sizes of brown gift bags. Your friends and family will appreciate the cute kid scribbles on their presents.

Super Easy Christmas Cookies

This year I am going the easy route. (I’ll miss you, biscotti!) I’m baking sugar cookies. Pillsbury has several ready-to-bake sugar cookie products. I plan on buying pre-cut holiday shapes and letting my toddler shake on festive sprinkles to her heart’s delight!

Start a Collection of Christmas Books

We have a few holiday board books from my daughter’s first Christmas last year. She absolutely loves books, so I am planning to stock up on more. Since we won’t be putting presents under the tree until Christmas Eve this year, I am going to put all of her holiday themed books in a cute box under the tree so she can enjoy them. I know my children will look forward to reading those special books each year.

Sing Christmas Carols

I normally sing “Twinkle, Twinkle” and ‘You are my Sunshine” while rocking my toddler at night. It’s been really nice to sing some new songs and start teaching her my favorite carols. I am looking forward to the day when she sings the words along with me!

These ideas are so simple, but they make my heart feel a little more festive in this busy season of life.

What are some of your favorite ways to spread holiday cheer with your family?
